Mr. Anders B. Johnsson
Secretary General – IPU
Inter-Parliamentary Union
C.P.438, 1211 Geneva 19,
Switzerland
Dear Mr. Anders B.
Johnsson,
The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has been
bringing to notice the intimidating tactics being employed by the
regime to force parliamentarians to change their political loyalty.
Through such tactics the regime has forced 18 MNAs and 5 and 8 MPAs of
the PPP Parliamentarians from Sindh and Punjab respectively. The
effort is continuing.
I write to bring to notice the victimization of a minority MPA from
Sindh Mr. Assardass. D. Hemnani of District Ghotki. He was asked to
vote at the time of ascertainment as to who commands the majority in
the Provincial Assembly to be the Chief Minister Sindh. On his refusal
the Government has started pressuring Mr. Assardass and his family.
Some instances are cited below:
a. Police has been deployed outside his wine shop which has been
selling wine under license for a long time. The shop has now been
closed by the administration.
b. Frequent threat of transfer of his brother who is in Government
service, to remote areas of Sindh are being given.
c. The MPA apprehends badly harm being inflicted on him including
other members of his family.
Due to intimidating tactics being employed by the Government the life
and security of the opposition parliamentarians is at stake. The
democratic countries are urged to use their influence on the
Government in Pakistan to respect human rights, and allow the
Parliamentarians to play their democratic role.
