On her (Ms Bhutto) Arriving at 50

BENAZIR 1986
Shamsul Alam Belal -
Dhaka/Bangladesh

How to rediscover you once again

How to read the poem I have in my mind

Written by a journalist's pen

In a hall-room of a Clifton house

Back in 1986.

Benazir, you are a mother

- a wife

- a lady

- a leader

Joan of Arc,

How to define you once again

How to say you, still there miles to go

still there something to do

still there time to fight

in the land of trampled right

Your eyes still speak of a dream

That shattered in a land, where

Your laws and tastes

Lost into the deepest and blackest hell

All the glories you have earned

Crumbed into dust

But all the prides you have in your person

Still smile in a spontaneous gesture

Never look back never breathe weak

Only look at the distant goal

Where lies the Millennium's perspective

Tell all to rise again to hold their heads high

And let all sing again, "We will never die."
