Zero-tolerance for extortionists, muggers: President Zardari

The President said that a scientific study should be carried out about the nature of each crime committed, whether it was related to sectarianism, extremism, land grabbing, street crime, targeted killing, political rivalry or migration from other areas of the country. This would help in devising strategies for combating each category of crime along scientific lines, he said. President felicitates newly elected Senators

The ruling PPP faced an upset and won only one general seat of the Upper House of parliament from the province. PPP Vice President Babar Awan won a general Senate seat but his party fellow Aslam Gill suffered a surprising defeat despite the PPP having a sizeable number of MPAs in the Punjab Assembly. In order to appease disappointed Gill, the president telephoned him and regretted his defeat. The Pakistan Peoples Party was launched at its founding convention held in Lahore on Nov 30 - Dec 1, 1967. At the same meeting, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto was elected as its Chairman. Begum Nusrat Bhutto was born on 23 March 1929, former first lady of Pakistan, widow of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto Shaheed and mother of Ms Sanam Bhutto, Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Shaheed, Mir Murtaza Bhutto Shaheed and Mir Shahnawaz Bhutto Shaheed. “My mother used to say: Democracy is the best revenge”, Bilawal said this in a firm tone when he was made the Chairperson of “Pakistan Peoples’ Party”, after her mother Ms. Benazir Bhutto was assassinated in Rawalpindi on 27th December, 2007. ‘Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’ is the eldest of the three children of former Prime Minister of Pakistan Benazir Bhutto. He was born on 21st September 1988. He expressed his desire for the country to become democratic as 'the founding father intended it to be' and championed his parents' struggle.

Mr. Zardari was elected Senator in 1997 and served in that capacity until the dissolution of the Senate following the military coup of 1999. He was elected Co-Chairman of the Pakistan Peoples Party in January 2008 following the assassination of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto. Mr. Zardari's political career spans two decades spent working closely with Shaheed Benazir Bhutto. During this period he helped formulate policies that expanded the freedom of the media, revolutionized telecommunications and opened Pakistan for foreign direct investment.
